LA PAZ - CITY

La Paz was founded on October 20, 1548, by the Spaniard Alonso de Mendoza, who had been sent by the Viceroy Pedro de la Gasca. With the name Our Lady of Peace (Nuestra Señora de la Paz), the City of La Paz is located in the north-west of Bolivia, with an area of 133,985 square kilometers. It is the seat of government and the capital of the department of the same name. It lies 3640 meters above sea level and has a population of 793, 293. (Census 2001 INE)
